But I say to you, do not resist an evil person [who insults you or violates your rights]; but whoever slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other toward him also [simply ignore insignificant insults or trivial losses and do not bother to retaliate—maintain your dignity, your self-respect, your poise].

Matthew 5:39

In today’s world with so much hate and violence going on, it’s very hard to do what Jesus is asking of us. The evil is all around, and they are changing the meaning of words to suit themselves and we are bound to get in the crossfire. Jesus is not asking us to stay silent. He is asking us to stay soft and spirit-minded, listening closely in the middle of the fire for the words He wants us to speak.

We must not take offense, but stay close to Jesus’ side. We do not have to stoop to others levels and become like them. Jesus wants us to stay strong and to stay focused. If we turn and step out of His leading, we will disrupt the seed planting He desired for us. Speak softly and only the words that Jesus gives you. Someone else He sends will do the same, softening the evil person until the right moment when the harvest is ready.

Open your eyes to see as Jesus sees and to love as He loves. There is great strength in restraint.
